How to Clean Your Wood Cutting Boards: 5 Effective Tips - Hardwood Lumber Company

With proper cleaning and care, your finely crafted Andrew Pearce wood product can last a lifetime and beyond, making it something you can pass down to the next generations.

DO:

  • After the first wash, oil your product.
  • Hand wash with warm, soapy water after every use.
  • Immediately hand dry with a clean cloth.
  • Recondition with wood oil every six months or as needed to maintain its natural beauty and prevent dullness or roughness.
  • Regular reconditioning is essential to prevent cracking, even with infrequent use.
  • Increase reconditioning frequency during dryer winter months.
  • Apply wood oil gradually with a soft cloth, covering all surfaces until desired shine is achieved.
  • Allow the oiled item to dry for 24 hours before contact with fabric.
  • For cutting boards, air dry overnight on a rack to prevent warping and mold growth.
  • Avoid storing damp boards directly on countertops or in cupboards.

DO NOT:

  • Do not put wooden products in the dishwasher, microwave, or oven.
  • Avoid leaving wooden products in standing water or filled with water.
  • Do not let wood completely dry out without being oiled for months at a time.
  • Refrain from using vegetable or olive oils to recondition your wood product, as they may promote bacterial growth.
  • Avoid using mineral oil or waxes on products, as they are not absorbed into the wood like refined walnut oil.
  • Do not store damp boards directly on countertops or in cupboards.
  • Avoid leaving fruits or vegetables to rot in the bottom of your bowl, as it could cause discoloration or staining of the wood.
  • Freshly cut strawberries and beets may stain new cherry wood bowls and cutting boards. Wait for cherry items to age for at least a year before allowing contact.
